The Kids Music Underground was founded on the belief that children ought to be approached as equals. And that learning is more profound and longer-lasting if it's presented, or disguised, within a playful group dynamic. Never underestimate the power of Silly. Nor the sense of empowerment that comes from a child's personal involvement and connection (with their parent/caregiver) in the learning process. It's simply healthy to sing, dance, laugh, and play with your child, and other children and adults, on a regular basis. It feels good. That they are learning the basic fundamentals of a musical vocabulary - rhythm and melody, pitch and dynamics - as well as an active appreciation of different forms of music, is an added bonus.

All classes are 45 minutes and they're FUN!

Each class has 10-12 children, accompanied by a parent/caregiver. Activities include singalong, small and big action songs, freestyle movement and dancing, and percussion/instrument play. No need to be bashful - it's all about having fun and making music with your child, so if you're willing to really participate (and be silly), your child will benefit greatly.
Please arrive 5-10 minutes before your scheduled class time, in order to get settled. It's important that your child be present for the 'Welcome' song, to hear his/her name and feel a sense of belonging.
Two make-up classes per session are allowed.
To register, fill out on-line registration form, including first and second choice of class time, print and sign, and mail it in with your payment.
Families can email to reserve a spot in class - but your space is secured once your payment is received. Then you'll get an email confirming your child's class time.

Refunds are available up to the first week of a registered session.

Testimonials
John Carlin's Kids Music Underground is, without exception, the most enjoyable toddler music class that I have come across in the eleven years that I have been a parent to three kids in NYC.
- Robin S.

Both of my children, ages 2 and 5, began going to John's music classes before they turned 1. John's enthusiasm, talent and love of children create a magical experience for the kids. My children love music - and much of that is thanks to John.
- Orna L.

I think that John Carlin is the best early childhood music teacher that I have come across in my nine years of classhopping with my three daughters. I have no doubt that my three girls' interest in and love for music is rooted in their participation in his classes, not to mention their adoration for the warm-hearted, wonderfully-silly, and fabulously-talented man that is John Carlin. I am so appreciative that my children have received the exceptional early childhood music education that John has offered.

John's  classes have a magical energy like no other.  He is creative, motivated and wonderful with the kids. The kids love him.  His music is toe-tapping, exciting, and keeps you singing all day!!!!

My 2 year old son is obsessed with John! His music is fabulous and his classes are addictive. The Kids Music Underground stands out, among the many kids classes in NYC, as reliably super fun, relaxed, and engaging--for kids and adults.

What do you get when you cross Mick Jagger with the Pied Piper?  John Carlin!!!!  His music classes are a blast for kids and their caregivers.  I think I may keep going even after my fourth child has gone to college.
Anne K.

John Carlin is pure magic when it comes to kids. My daughter has been taking his class for four straight years (since she was a few months old) and his high-energy lyrical class has always been a highlight of our day. John's music is clever and silly and easy to sing along to. The atmosphere of his classes are always warm, inviting and full of love. It's by far the fastest way to spend an hour with your child--the time just flies!

John Carlin is the Bob Dylan of Brooklyn Heights.  His pint-sized fans are devoted to him with a zeal that is amazing, but unsurprising to anyone lucky enough to have been in a class with him.  My daughter Dana has been attending John's classes from the beginning, as have I, and they have been an important part of Dana's development --- and she just loves the classes and John.  John's gentleness, love, and energy make every class a delight. The way he gives individual attention to every child, of various ages, while simultaneously maintaining structure and order in the class as a whole, is really remarkable.  We have attended other music programs with other teachers, but nobody compares with John.  He is a truly gifted teacher, deeply loved by the children (and the parents).  And last, but not least, his music is fantastic.  I sometimes listen to John's CDs even when Dana is not around.  This class is absolutely the BEST!
